Book Description[]

Rune's coronation is interrupted by a jade-wearing mysterious figure who seems to possess unknown powers, and skills out of Atlantis's lost past. With New Atlantis under siege and subject to unrest from the disenfranchised who have rallied to the banner of the self proclaimed "Lady Time", can the Arcana, Rune, and his found family defeat her and her allies? Or does the solution to all their troubles lie, not in the present, but in the all-too recent past?

Plot Summary[]

Rune, Brand, and other Arcana (Anton, Zurah, High Priestess) investigate a massacre at one of the High Priestess's rejuvenation centers. Investigation reveals that the massacre was committed in a rage by a single powerful (Principality or Arcana) individual initially in a rage after rejuvenation failed, but eventually as a calculated attempt to seize numerous sigils by conquest.

Rune is then pushed out of the active investigation ("Your days of running down suspects are over, Lord Sun" says Lord Tower), as, at the reclaimed Sun estate, he must prepare for for his coronation as the Sun Arcana and hire new staff, particularly a new seneshal (a role until now filled awkwardly by Brand). This effort is simplified greatly by Diana Saint Nicholas offering herself up for the job and, given her skills and experience, easily getting the job.

Rune meets with Ciaran to visit and pick up Layne (who is now asserting a non-binary gender). While there, Rune confronts Ciarian with his realization that Ciarian is actually, secretly, The Magician, but promises to keep it secret.

Another minor crisis is averted on the Sun Estate when it's revealed that Corbie has been playing unsupervised with Flynn.
